Slough Borough Council became a unitary council on April 1, 1998 and is the largest employer in the town. 1,750 people work for the local authority with a wide ranging set of skills and expertise. The council has a shared vision and priorities to inspire its town, bind communities and instill pride. It exists to deliver high quality services to the people of Slough and to work in partnership with others to improve the quality of life for those who live and work in the borough. It is committed to demonstrating that it can practice value in everything it does, both in delivering services and working with others.
The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) is the single, national housing and regeneration delivery agency for England. We aim to create opportunity for people to live in homes they can afford in places they want to live, by enabling local authorities and communities to deliver the ambition they have for their own areas.
The Heart of Slough will achieve our vision. As well as providing technical skills and regeneration expertise, we have committed more than £11m to deliver the project.
The funding will enable infrastructure work, which will remove the existing roundabout, install new pedestrian crossings, and dramatically improve public transport links and traffic flow along the A4 (Bath Road). This work began in March 2011 and will be completed by Spring 2011. The HCA is also supporting the creation of an exciting new development of around 100 new and affordable homes on the site of the current library for the Slough community, along with a new hotel.
